We come out of the jungle in to wide open space. Oasis dot the savannah wherever water is found. Grass lands go for miles off in any direction. Small brick homes with thatched roofs start appearing. We pass a cattle ranch. We see the local ameri-indians watching the bus pass from their front porches. Some flag down the bus to head in to "town". Lethem is the central supply area for villages all over the savannah. The earth is red. We see Mts. in the distance....the Kanuku, they are beautiful. Brother Lopez meets us at the KH in Lethem and we walk to our apt. it is like a little dorm room, just right for our short visit. Brother Jordan has rented it for the year. So our staying there will help him pay for it while he is away. We are really tired. Later we meet Leon our neighbor. He is 29 and from Australia. He brings us a tub of ice cream and says it's a great treat after a hot day in service. That night we go to dinner with all the need greaters there. They are saying good bye to Desirea who has been there for four years. She will be going to one of the islands to be closer to her boyfriend. It is a fun evening. The next day we went to explore the little town. We did some grocery shopping for the week. They actually have real stores that you can go into to shop. This is a border town with Brazil. At one of the main dirt road intersections we see two piglets chased out of a shop. The are rounding the corner on two hoofs as fast as they can go, they are heading home kicking up dust. It has to be one of the most comical sights I have ever seen. On Wednesday we meet for service. Reggie went with brother Leon and I went with one of the local ameri-indian sisters. Her name is Happy. Everyone still speaks softly but it is a more familiar sounding english that they speak. The whole group walks together to the territory at a leisurely pace visiting away. At the head of our pack is pioneer dog. A pioneer owned this dog 13 years ago and it would go in service everyday with the brother. After the brother left the dog stayed behind and has accompanied the friends in service ever since. sometimes you think she's gone. But if another dog starts barking at us she is there to the rescue. Another comical moment. We cross a wooden foot bridge and part ways. Happy studies with a woman names Stella. Stella is elderly and laying in her hammock inside when we arrive. She is prepared. I really enjoyed the study and her comments. Thursday was a laundry day as always. We really enjoyed the meeting in Lethem. The friends are all happy and bubbly. They have 58 publisher but over 100 attend on Sunday. This congregation also cares for a few other groups. So each meeting one of the brothers heads out to conduct meetings at the other groups.
I made plans to work with Elizabeth on Friday. When she arrived a little late I have empathy for her. Her and her husband Nevil and three children walk 45 min. each way to meetings and service. They have only been baptized two years but their children are on the school and she is wanting to regular pioneer. She was a great partner in service, zealous and bold. Like the coast it seems everyone has a bible teach book. One on my houses had an elderly man swinging in his hammock reading the bible teach book. So encouraging to see there love for spiritual things. Elizabeth has 10-13 bible studies. We part ways as I have to get ready for Moco Moco. And you know the rest of the story. I'll post pictures of the friends in service.
